How many liters of water a day do you need to drink?

The human body is composed of almost 60% water. We constantly lose water through urine and sweat.

Water is essential for health, but needs vary from one individual to another.

Everyone’s water needs depend on many factors including health status, activity level and place of living.

Advice from different health organizations about water use is sometimes contradictory. The National Health Program advises drinking about 2.5 liters a day.

Some foreign health organizations, however, provide different advice.

The National Academy of Medicine of the United States ( NAM ) suggests that men must consume a minimum of 3.3 to 3.7 liters of water a day and women 2.7 liters. These recommendations include water in beverages and food ( source ).

In addition to the various health organizations, there are also health gurus who claim that you have to drink all day, otherwise you go straight to dehydration.

As with most things, needs depend on each individual and many factors (internal and external) influence and determine our water needs. I will come back to this later in this article.

Does high water consumption promote weight loss?

Do we lose weight faster when we drink a lot of water? This question is often asked on my blog.

Water is given many virtues in terms of weight loss. Drinking water is supposed to increase the metabolism and decrease the appetite.

I’ll be short: drinking several gallons of water a day is good for your health and is a simple way to promote weight loss.

Since water is calorie-free, it is usually linked to a reduction in caloric intake and weight loss. This is mainly because water replaces other drinks, often high in calories and added sugars.

For this reason, it is important to encourage children to drink water at an early age. This way, the risk of overweight ( source ) can be avoided .

Several studies have shown that drinking 500 ml of water temporarily boosts metabolism by 24-30% ( source ).

When you want to lose weight, the best is to drink cold water because it causes a greater thermal effect. The body needs more energy to bring the water to body temperature ( source ).

In addition, drinking water about half an hour before meals soothes hunger, and leads to fewer calories and ultimately weight loss.
