The Significance of Health Screening for Men

Health screening for men in Singapore

You tend to visit a doctor out of necessity. This should not be the case especially if you are a man. Health screening for men in Singapore must be done regularly. When you undergo regular health screenings, it can save your life completely especially for men. This is so because even those who are considered as having tougher sex are also susceptible to a lot of health conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure, and others. Some of these conditions are considered silent killers. The following are the most popular of them:

Obesity is the number one culprit. Obesity is the body mass index or BMI. This year, it was said that about 12.1 percent of men living in Singapore are obese. The most common reason is unhealthy food choices and work-related stress. Obesity makes men vulnerable to heart disease and diabetes which are known as lifestyle diseases. A basic health screening has to be done every year where your BMI and waist circumference will be checked.

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease which is brought about by high glucose levels in the blood. This is caused by insufficient production of insulin. This condition affects around 9 percent of the adult population in Singapore particularly the men. Diabetes when not treated or uncontrolled may lead to blindness, kidney failure, amputation of the limbs, and also impotence. When you are over 40 years old, a blood glucose test is recommended to be done every three years.

Colorectal cancer is another disease that plagues most men. This is a type of cancer that begins in the rectum or colon. It has become the most common cancer that concerns men. Singapore is known for having one of the highest incidences in Asia. When left untreated, this can lead to a removal of a large portion of the colon or worse death. Just like all types of cancers, screening is important for early detection so as to find out if the polyps or any cancerous growths have not spread out into other parts of the body. You need to do a colonoscopy every ten years to avoid this.

Hypertension or high blood pressure is a condition which results when blood is pumped at a high pressure. This condition is known to affect 30 percent of the adult Singaporean men. The catch here is that most of the time it is undetected. When this condition is not treated, it may lead to coronary artery disease, heart and renal failure, and stroke. It is recommended to undergo a painless and fast blood pressure measurement test every year.

High Cholesterol

High cholesterol refers to high levels of lipids found in the blood. This is what blocked arteries is all about. This affects 18 percent of Singaporeans and the most susceptible are the men. High cholesterol increases the chances of acquiring heart disease, stroke, and other health conditions. In Singapore, more than a quarter of annual deaths are caused by strokes and heart attacks. When you reached 40 and above, you have to undergo a fasting lipids health screening test once every three years.
